Service Description
English Skills for Academia is a skills based course designed to strengthen students’ foundational competencies in academic English. The course covers the foundations of English sentence and clause types, essential punctuation rules, and strategies for reducing wordiness in writing so that writers can strengthen their editing skills. The course also emphasizes spoken communication through pronunciation awareness and conversation practice, providing hands-on opportunities to apply language skills in both written and oral academic contexts. Topics: 1. Sentence Types: overview of the English sentence types and their rules 2. Clause Types: overview of all English clauses and their usage in academic writing 3. Punctuation: overview of the most common punctuation rules to be respected while writing academically 4. Wordiness: tips to avoid excessive use of words while writing in English 5. Peer Review: collaborative hands-on practice on student's power writing focusing on editing 6. Reading Skills: tips about reading effectively and using information in writing 7. Presentation Skills: tips for preparing academic presentations 8. Pronunciation Practice: raising awareness on pronunciation skills 9. Conversation Practice: focus on maintaining a conversation with peers 10. Presentation Practice: time to deliver a short presentation Class meets virtually from 10:30-12:30 MST daily from June 22 to July 3.
